It was a photo of Lago di Braies that first made me fall for Dolomites & added it at the top of my bucket list. That surreal shade of emerald green, the wooden boats drifting lazily, and the jagged peaks of the Dolomites rising dramatically in the background — it didn’t look real. Just one photo, and I was hooked.
I was in South Tyrol at a vegan hotel in Italy in 2023, very close to Dolomites. While it was on our itinerary, unfortunately, I couldnt make it. Ever since I was obsessing over it — and this summer, I finally went.
And oh, it was everything…..
Most people think of Italy and picture Amalfi or Venice — and fair enough, they’re iconic. But tucked away in the north is a part of Italy that many skip or simply don’t know exists. The Dolomites are wilder, more raw, and in many ways, even more beautiful. The kind of place that makes you feel small in the best way. 🌿
I picked a vegan hotel situated in the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is pure magic — rolling green meadows, bursts of yellow wildflowers, storybook alpine huts, and trails that make you want to walk forever.
The pictures hardly do justice to the beauty of Lago di Braies. We went in early - before the crowd & not only did we do the beautiful boat ride but also walked through the most stunning circular trail.
There are many beautiful turquoise lakes in the Dolomites region and it’s also home to Tre Cime, Seceda, Alpe di Siusi — names that barely capture the wonder of being there in person. Suggested itinerary
Day 1 – Lago di Braies + Surroundings (Puster Valley)
Day 2: Tre Cime + Cadini + Misurina (Sesto Dolomites). Stop by at Lago di Misurina (perfect lunch stop by the lake)
Day 3 – Val Gardena + Seceda + Alpe di Siusi
💡 Bonus: There are two fully vegan hotels in and around the Dolomites region.
Italy’s best-kept secret? I think so. And I already can’t wait to go back.
