#TBT – Ahilya Fort At Maheshwar

I’ve stayed in a couple of heritage properties in Rajasthan and loved those beautiful hotels with their excellent service. A piece of pure luxury, each of those hotels were amazing – the royal themed decor, beautiful hand carved furniture with accents of gold and a nice blend of old and new. So when I got a chance to visit the Ahilya Fort Hotel in Maheshwar, I was quite excited.

Tucked on the bank of Narmada river, perched up on a hill and overlooking the famous Ghats of Maheshwar, the Ahilya Fort Hotel was quite intriguing from the outside. With only 13 rooms, this 18th century fort hotel is quite a hush hush place, and is only accessible to the hotel guests aka not open for visitors. The moment we entered the fort  hotel, we were transported to a completely different era. Whitewashed walls, cobbled floors, a open courtyard in the center, the foyer walls clad with pictures of royalty, tranquil inner courtyards with plantations everywhere – all in all an enchanting place maintaining its old world charm.

The property is overlooked by Prince Richard Holkar himself, who is known to pay special attention to every detail at the fort hotel {especially the culinary}. We can see that in the way the fort has not lost its individuality and retained its character. And the sunrise and sunset views from the terrace gardens is truly breathtaking {you can imagine how amazing it would feel sipping in your tea overlooking the beautiful Narmada river as the sun is rising}

But I must say, it was quite different from the luxurious and opulent heritage hotels that I had stayed in till date; it is not for those who like everything larger than life and opulent. Its a cocoon of peace and quiet offering subtle luxury that gives you a feel of home yet transporting you to a different era.

Being a strict vegetarian who does not even eat at places that serves non-veg, I didn’t sample anything from their kitchen, but I hear amazing things about their food, esp the fact that all vegetables come from their own organic gardens.

It’s a place that would certainly fascinate the Westerners as it offers them an absolutely different experience with impeccable service. But for someone who has seen old houses in Rajasthan and lived and breathed true India, it wouldn’t really be worth the money {it is quite an expensive stay}. Nevertheless, really enjoyed visiting the Ahilya Fort with its beautiful views of Narmada ghats and ancient decor.

The hotel’s pool was tucked between the organic gardens of the Ahilya Fort, surrounded by beautiful lemon trees and gardens, giving you complete privacy.

Of course I couldn’t have left the place without getting some pictures. Even planned my outfit. So I wore my favourite a bling jacket to rev up the quiet peaceful surroundings and threw in cobalt blue shoes and green Tonda clutch {yes its vegan} to complement all the greenery around.

You must plan a weekend getaway at Maheshwar, the place is amazing with its beautiful ghats, heritage sites and shopping. Maheshwar is actually famous for its Maheshwari hand-loomed textile that comes in amazing weaves and colours. You can also find organic cottons at the village shops.
